1. Inspect the Actual Portfolio (Not the Logo Wall)
Most agency websites show a logo wall of brand clients. That's not a portfolio โ it's a client list. What you need to see is:
- Live, working products you can actually open in a browser or app store
- Projects similar in complexity to what you're building
- Evidence of the specific technical challenges your project will face (payments, real-time features, high traffic, multi-language)
Ask specifically: "Can I see the app or website you built for [client]?" If the answer is "it's no longer live" for every project, be cautious.

2. Evaluate the Team Structure, Not Just the Sales Pitch
Many agencies in Bangkok are actually brokers โ they'll take your project and outsource it to cheaper developers in Vietnam, India, or Eastern Europe. There's nothing wrong with this model, but you should know if that's what you're buying.
Key questions to ask:
- "Where are your developers located?"
- "Who will be the lead developer on my project โ can I meet them?"
- "Do you hire developers as full-time employees or contractors?"

Before signing anything, ask a potential agency to walk you through how they'd approach your specific project. A credible agency should be able to describe:

- What happens if the project goes over budget or timeline

5. Understand Exactly What's Included in the Quote
Software development quotes can be structured very differently, making comparison hard. Before you compare prices, make sure each quote answers:
- Is UI/UX design included, or quoted separately?
- Is QA (quality assurance) and testing included?
- What server and infrastructure setup is covered?
- What does "launch" mean โ who handles deployment?
- What post-launch support is included, and for how long?
- Who owns the source code on delivery?

6. Check References and Online Presence
Look for:
- Google reviews โ Are there real reviews with specific project details?
- LinkedIn presence โ Can you verify the company's employees, size, and tenure?
- Client references โ Ask for 2โ3 references you can contact directly. Any credible agency will provide them.
- Clutch or similar directories โ Third-party verified reviews are more reliable than self-reported testimonials.
Be skeptical of agencies with only 5-star reviews and no specific detail. Real reviews mention both strengths and challenges.
7. Evaluate Long-Term Fit, Not Just Project Delivery
Software is never truly "done" โ it will need updates, new features, bug fixes, and scaling support. Before signing with any agency, think about:
